Agronomy & Soil Science

The WCROC Agronomy and Soil Science department mission is twofold, 1.) Conduct and cooperate in University lead applied research focusing on plant and soil management systems that protect our environment and increase producer profitability, 2.) Produce organic and conventional feedstuffs for WCROC organic and conventional livestock programs.  In 2009 WCROC will be farming 160 acres organically growing corn, alfalfa, small grains, and incorporating cover crops.

Our agronomy and soils research efforts focus on varietal evaluation, soil fertility, and nutrient loss.  Commonly grown crops are evaluated for plant growth characteristics, grain yield and seed content, responsiveness to macro and micro plant nutrients, and the roles that tillage, manure application, and cropping systems play in nutrient retention.
