A Great Success: 2024 Midwest Farm Energy Conference

July 03, 2024

On June 26th and 27th, the West Central Research & Outreach Center (WCROC) hosted ag industry professionals, renewable energy specialists, and intrigued members of the public for the Midwest Farm Energy Conference (MFEC). Over the course of the 2-day conference, experts from the University of Minnesota and more discussed the latest energy technologies available and their potential usage in agricultural practice.

The WCROC is a deliberate choice for hosting this conference, as a large portion of their research is focused on renewable energy and its use in farm settings. WCROC is home to the first-in-the-world renewable hydrogen and ammonia pilot plant, which was established in 2013. Organic dairy cattle at WCROC find shelter and shade under portable solar arrays which charge electric tractors and experimental ‘weed terminators’ that autonomously manage pesky weeds on WCROC’s acreage.

Attendees to the MFEC are able to listen and ask questions of experts in the field to better understand the potential of things like ‘green’ ammonia, agrivoltaics, and more. Despite the rainy June weather, they were able to see a demonstration of WCROC’s latest addition, an all-electric Monarch tractor with autonomous capabilities. Those willing to brave the rain further were able to tour WCROC’s property to see the 1.65 MW turbine which powers the ‘green’ ammonia plant and explore the other ways in which WCROC has included renewable and sustainable practices in their research.

On the night of June 26th, attendees gathered at the Old No. 1 Bar & Grill for the keynote address. After being introduced by Senator Tina Smith, Pete Wyckoff from the Minnesota Department of Commerce presented on the multitude of funding opportunities newly available through the State of Minnesota. From large institutions to small family farms, there are a variety of programs either currently available or that will be available soon. You can read more about these programs at: https://mn.gov/commerce/energy/consumer/energy-programs/

A large room filled with round tables, with many individuals sitting. At the far end, a presentation screen is down and the keynote speaker addresses the room.

Ultimately, the 2024 Midwest Farm Energy Conference was a huge success and we are excited to plan for the next conference… taking place in 2026!
