Poppe awarded Bronze Award from MSHS
Each year, the Minnesota State Horticultural Society (MSHS) honors individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to horticulture and greening efforts in public gardens and community projects. Steve Poppe, Sr Horticulturist at the WCROC was selected as the 2015 recipient of the Bronze Award.
Steve began working at the West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) near the U of MN, Morris in 1975 and has led its horticulture department since 1988. In his time at Morris, Steve has transformed the display garden into a regional showcase, attracting thousands of visitors every year to this bright spot on the prairie. Horticulture Night held each summer brings nearly 1,500 visitors to the garden, which features a heritage garden, a children's garden, a hosta garden, displays and trials of annuals and perennials (Steve is Minnesota's only All-America Selections trial judge) as well as beautifully designed and cared-for containers and plantings.
Steve worked with the City of Morris and local groups to complete a trail system to connect the garden with Morris and a popular local park and campground. He has organized an 18-person advisory committee to guide and build the garden for which he raises funds every year. This group developed a master plan around the uniqueness of West Central Minnesota agriculture and the prairie.
The Minnesota State Horticultural Society (MSHS) honored Steve with the award on October 24, 2015 at their annual meeting.
