Encourage high school students to participate in this year's virtual Minnesota Youth Institute hosted by the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. This program offers a tremendous opportunity for teens to propose solutions to local and global hunger issues while gaining access to scholarships, faculty connections, and programs in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) at the U of M.
How to do this? Students research potential solutions to global hunger issues, summarize findings in a 3-5 page paper and present the results to science, agribusiness, and legislative leaders during a half day event in the spring. The event will be held virtually on Monday, May 17, 2021. Registration and papers must be submitted by April 12. There is no cost to participate. Every participant is awarded a $1000 scholarship, and is then eligible for additional opportunities including paid internships. Select students will represent Minnesota at the Global Youth Institute in October.
In 2020, eight Minnesota students, from seven different high schools, were invited to join 214 high school students and 55 college students across 11 countries to share their ideas for ending hunger at the Global Youth Institute hosted virtually by the World Food Prize Foundation in Des Moines, Iowa.
